Datacenters today are the backbone of any business. Every vendor today looks to offering innovative, mission-critical solutions that obtain higher availability systems, improve efficiency and offer flexible, scalable solutions that meet the specific needs of businesses.

Currently, Indian data centers have 250 to 300 MW of power and this is expected to grow to 550 to 600 MW by 2025. As per industry experts, it is estimated that by 2027, data centers across the globe will account for 3% of the global energy use and 2% of greenhouse gases and consume 3 times more power than the current consumption levels.

At the same time, demand for UPS systems is increasing due to the growing adoption of cloud servers. UPS, often referred to as the “heart” of the electrical network has widespread applications ranging from continuous process operations to healthcare to Information Technology or any other mission-critical installations. UPS manufacturers are more focused on developing systems with lower ownership cost, greater efficiency, and increasingly investing in developing reliable technology to fulfill demand for cloud computing.

Eaton, the power management solution provider is also on a mission to help companies optimize their data centers and business for tomorrow. It offers solutions to protect customers’ equipment from hazards and outages that can cause million-dollar losses.

Eaton has a number of bestselling products and solutions like its power quality solutions (1PH and 3PH UPS) that provide clean, reliable, and energy-efficient power to critical applications. Similarly Data Centre and Facility UPS are another of its bestselling products.

Apart from UPS, Eaton also has Power distribution products that provide the backbone of an electrical system. Eaton has developed solutions in medium and low voltage power distribution to ensure a reliable, safe, and efficient supply of power to critical data center applications.

So why Eaton?

“Firstly it is about Reliability,” explains Syed Sajjadh Ali, Managing Director – India, Electrical Sector, Eaton. Eaton provides reliable distribution equipment, DC network power systems, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) to ensure a steady flow of high-quality power—because an outage of just a few seconds can mean catastrophe in a data center. When setting up a data center, Eaton will also help you put a disaster recovery program in place to deal with any unexpected emergencies, safeguarding your data and network so your business can continue operations without missing a beat.”

The second factor, like Syed Sajjadh has pointed it out is Efficiency. Eaton’s three-phase, high-efficiency UPS products provide maximum savings through unrivaled power performance in efficiency, input current harmonic distortion (THD), and power factor. With Eaton’s Power Xpert server solution, one can understand energy usage patterns, identify energy hogs and realize energy savings.

The third and the last factor is Safety. “Safety is important, for not only data and equipment, but also workers. Eaton engineers provide diagnostic arc flash studies, retrofit programs, and employee training to assess guidelines, reduce fault current and duration, place people away from faults and prevent faults through predictive diagnostic tools and monitoring equipment,” explains Syed.

So what is UPS-as-a-reserve and how it can help companies earn from their UPS investment?

The UPS-as-a-reserve technology allows large Data Center operators to give back energy to the grid. The UPS’s primary role doesn’t change, but by creating UPS as a Reserve (UPSaaR), organizations can enable Energy Transition. UPSaaR organizations can offset both their capital expenditure while reducing the carbon footprint and boosting renewable energy.

Eaton has developed an industry-first data center solution using UPSaaR, Eaton EnergyAware, which lets organizations not only use UPS as a backup system but also use it as a solution to earn from their UPS investment.

“This is installed along with UPS to regulate demand from the grid i.e, responsible for upstream and downstream charging to discharge the battery back to the grid,” explains Syed. “It compensates the data center companies/operators for reducing energy consumption when required to maintain the grid frequency and contributing to green energy, thus generating revenue from their UPS investments,” he concludes.
